  • Buzzfeed || I Went To A "Sober Curious" Bar, And It Was Actually More Social Than Any Bar...

    March 24, 2023

In recent years, the "sober curious" movement has gotten bigger and bigger — especially among Gen Z'ers. So, when I quit drinking five months ago, I felt that I was in pretty good company. But when I started researching sober groups and spaces near me, I quickly saw that with sobriety came few events for alcohol-free twentysomethings…

Then one glorious day, I found Elizabeth Gascoigne, aka @absenceofproof, on TikTok. In her videos, Elizabeth advertised these nonalcoholic parties she was throwing in a GORGEOUS speakeasy. I was immediately sold on the promise of alcohol-free espresso martinis, so I registered to go to one of her events ASAP. Here’s how it went…

  • Eater Seattle || A ‘Sober Curious’ Nightlife Party Is Coming to Seattle

    February 24, 2023

Not drinking alcohol is the new drinking alcohol. The number of sober Americans has been rising for years, a trend fueled in large part by young people choosing not to drink, or drinking less, even when they go out to bars and clubs.

This “sober curious” crowd is the target for Absence of Proof, a pop-up event series that bills itself as a “night off of drinking.” Founder Elizabeth Gascoigne said that sober curious could mean people who “are reevaluating their relationship with alcohol,” but it could also mean people who merely say, “I want to not drink every night of the week.” Absence of Proof launched in New York earlier this year and it’s been successful enough that Gascoigne is now expanding to Los Angeles and Seattle.

  • New York Times || Dry for January? New Bars Cater to the ‘Sober Curious’

    January 16, 2023

I stopped drinking six years ago. There are many things I don’t miss: hangovers, empty checking accounts, throwing up on the subway.

Then there are things I do miss: the seedy splendor of a dive, the shallow glamour of a cocktail lounge, and the relative ease with which I could meet new people and make new friends. I also miss the serendipity, spontaneity and eccentric characters that a night spent crawling from bar to bar sometimes offered.

Luckily for me, a new crop of alcohol-free bars, dance parties and “sober curious” events have sprung up in recent years. They cater to the millennials and zoomers who are reportedly drinking less, and are seeking an alternative nightlife that is not centered around alcohol.

    January 4, 2023

For many people, having a good time is usually connected with alcohol. When people think of parties, festivities and social gatherings as a whole, they think “where is the alcohol?” But sometimes people either don’t drink at all or don’t want to drink on a particular night, and that should not mean they have to miss out on fun if the focus of the event revolves around drinking.

Elizabeth Gascoigne, founder of Absence of Proof, made it her mission to make sure that didn’t have to be the case. She decided to create a space that had all of the energy of a bar but none of the alcohol.
